Dear Billie Morris, my name is Clark Howard and I have been living abroad for some time. I have the first volume of your excellent "A Pictorial History of Lauderdale County" and wish to purchase the second volume. Will you kindly email me details on how to order it? On page 65 of the Volume One is a photo of my mother, Chloe Clark. On page 41, I worked for Berg &Schafer in 1948-50 part-time while attending RHS (graduated class opf '50). I knew Lucille Fowler who was also working there at the time. Also knew, of course, Betty Berg Feist and Mr. Sam Berg and his wife, Mrs Alice Berg. I also worked for a time behind the soda fountain at Cheek's Drug Store. Tollie cheek quietly fired me one Saturday night after learning that I was the son of James Richmond "Tennessee Slim" Howard, a notorious bootlegger who served a term in Atlanta Federal Penitentiary. Ironically, Mr. Sam Berg's brother, Mr. Jesse Berg, was the U.S. Marshal who transported my father to prison. The Berg & Schafer people knew that, of course, but hired me anyway. Mr. Sam Berg said once, with a smile, "I wonder if Tollie Cheek got to select his father?" I enjoyed seeing (page 208) the photo of Mac Duvall, who paid me 25 cents to rake the leaves around his house down on Chickasaw Street, across from where I ved with my Grandmother, Mrs. Ethel Clark, who was best friend with Mrs. Duvall. They both had rocking chairs on their front porches and would visit each other on alternate days. "Lordy, Lordy, it's hot!" I heard that hundreds of time; it was the opening statement of each visit! Sorry, didn't mean to go on and on like this; it's the writer in me, I guess. I look foreard to ordering your Volume Two. Clark Howard, Palm Springs, Caifornia. rchoward440@cs.com
