It all began during the Christmas season of 1993 when a young girl and her brother, who had just arrived to the United States from Vietnam, wrote a letter to Little Saigon Radio. The young girl’s letter simply expressed her wish for a blanket so she could share with her siblings. The newly arrived children came from a warmer tropical country and were yet to acclimate to their newfound home. The brother asked for a decent pair of tennis shoes to wear to school. Over Little Saigon Radio’s airwaves, the letter touched many people in the community. Soon, blanket and shoes poured in by the dozens as well as many other gifts. These gifts from generous hearts helped make the children’s wishes come true. With the overwhelming support from the community and hundreds of other letters, the radio station was overflowing with donations. Several volunteers came forward to lend a helping hand. The unprecedented momentum paved the way for the very first “Christmas Wish Program” in Little Saigon. Over 1,500 gifts were distributed to children that initial year. Since then, the Christmas Wish Program became an annual charity event in the community. The effort illustrated a caring community whose individuals were willing to share with those who are less fortunate and foremost assist in carrying on this wonderful program. The Christmas Wish Program has grown to become one of the largest charity events among the Vietnamese communities in Southern California, Northern California, Houston – Texas and many villages in Vietnam. It brought the joy of Christmas to over 7,000 children last year alone. To handle such an enormous task annually, the volunteers from that first year grew to form an independent volunteer group. The group then flourished to become Little Saigon Foundation, a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. As a community-based non-profit organization, Little Saigon Foundation focuses mostly in programs for the youth and community services. Little Saigon Foundation has organized, sponsored and supported many other programs annually such as “Camp For Youth”, a summer camp to help and mentor juveniles at-risk, - “Senior Appreciation Day”, a special day honoring senior members in the community, “Moon Festival”, a festive cultural event in the Vietnamese Lunar calendar, and has provided support to many other youth activities and many charity events in the community. In Vietnam, besides the annual Christmas Wish Program held throughout Vietnam, Little Saigon Foundation also organizes, sponsors and supports many other beneficial programs. With the help of volunteers in Vietnam, programs such as “Homeless Children Education Assistance Program”, “Disabled Children Assistance Program”, “The Children of Lepers Assistance Program”, “Medial Outreach Program” a program where doctors and dentists volunteers to travel to many rural villages to provide free medial and dental services to individuals, and “Victims of Natural Disaster Relief Program”. All members of Little Saigon Foundation are volunteers from various youth organizations and individuals from the community. All finiacial support for it programs is contributed from members of the community and our corporate sponsors. One-hundred-percent of our financial resources are for the benefit of the recipients.
